Writing Assignments

All writing assignments must be submitted to Turnitin.com before class on the due date. Late assignments will lose 10% per day (excluding weekends) for either electronic or paper versions and 20% per day for both.

Writing 1. Due 8/29/05 Read the paper by Inglesby. Write a one-page paper summarizing the microbiology you have learned from this paper: information about Bacillus anthracis, disease cause and transmission, symptoms, and public health issues.

Writing 2. Due 9/5/06 Read the case report of the 2001 anthrax bioterrorism attacks. Write a one page paper comp[aring and contrasting the actual attacks with Inglesby's hypothetical attack. Find at least three similarities and three differences between the two scenarios.

Writing 3 Due 9/19/06 Read Chapter 2 in the textbook aboout finding sources. Pick a microbiology topic that interests you (a specific microbe or disease, antibiotic resistance, immunology, etc). and find 10 sources of information about that topic. Use Medline (available at the Arizona Health Sciences Library site 'http://www.ahsl.arizona.edu/ to find at least 3 primary sources (journal articles). Click on Medline and then PubMed and use the searchbox at the top. Also use at least two of the internet search engines discussed in your text. List the sources as described in Chapter 5.

Writing 4 Due 10/3/06.Read the chapter on Nutrition and Growth in Todar's On-line Textbook of Bacteriology. Write a summary of the key points of the chapter.

Writing 5 Due 10/10/06 Record growth results daily until next week (number of colonies, size, color, texture). Following the format in Chapter 8 your textbook (Pechenik, A Short Guide to Writing About Biology), write a report about your findings. This report should have a title, an abstract, an introduction, materials and methods (the growth plates contain TSM medium), the results, and a discussion section (you do not need to cite any other sources).
