Required Manual:
MIC 205L Laboratory Manual
Available online
Course description:
Microbiology 205L is the laboratory companion course to the MIC 205A lecture
course. The credit and grade for 205L is separate from the lecture. This course
is designed to introduce microbiology to non-major students. This semester we
will study the different features of microorganisms and learn techniques standard
in microbiological research.
Attendance Policy:
Laboratory attendance is required and is instrumental to succeeding in this course.
Missed quizzes will count as a zero (you may drop one quiz) and absence for a
notebook check will also result in a score of zero. Absence from more than
4 labs will result in an E for the lab grade unless you withdraw.

Notebooks:
You are required to maintain a notebook throughout the semester. A bound notebook
is preferred to minimize the potential for losing pages (and important notes
as well!). This notebook should have a table of contents on the first page and
all subsequent pages numbered. Each experiment should have its own title, purpose,
methods, observations, and conclusion. You are responsible for having all experiments
recorded in the notebook. This notebook will be graded 8 times during the semester
at 10 points each.
Lab Rules:
You must adhere to the lab rules as discussed on the first day of class. No food
or drink is allowed in the lab. You should wear closed-toed shoes and a lab coat
for each lab. In addition, you are responsible for cleaning your area before
you leave the lab.
Lab Safety:
These laboratory exercises have been developed to minimize dangers posed to students.
However, we occasionally use equipment or reagents that can cause injury and
accidents could happen. You must report any injury to the prep-room staff or
your TA immediately! Showers, eyewashes, fire extinguishers and first-aid kits
are present in the event of an emergency.
Code of Academic Integrity:
University standards for ethical behavior are outlined under The Code of Academic
Integrity. (http://w3.arizona.edu/~studpubs/policies/cacaint.htm).
Additional departmental statement on academic honesty: All forms of academic
dishonesty are prohibited, including, but not limited to: cheating, fabrication,
facilitating academic dishonesty, plagiarism, modifying any academic work to
obtain additional credit without the approval of the instructor, or attempting
to carry out any of the above. Committing any of the above will result in sanctions
being imposed on the student's scores or grade up to and including the assignment
of an "E" for the entire course.

Students who need special accommodation or services should contact the SALT (Strategic
Alternatives Learning Techniques) Center for Learning Disabilities (SALT Center,
