Three hourly exams (each worth 100 points) will be given, on the dates specified on the accompanying Lecture/Reading Schedule. The format will include multiple choice, short answer, and essay. Makeup exams will be given only under unusual circumstances. Challenges to "correct" answers are welcome, but should be made in writing (or via email), and within one week of the date on which exams are returned. This will allow me time to understand your arguments.
Case
Studies have been posted, and links to answers will
be established after each due date. These medical cases are designed
to help you learn something about microbiology in the clinical
setting, about pathogenesis of these infections, and about the
use of available resources to solve problems.
Each report should be on one printed page, using type no smaller
than 12 point, with one inch margins on all sides, and including
your name and ID number. BE CONCISE!! IF YOU FAIL TO COMPLY WITH
THESE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS, I WILL BE FORCED TO RETURN THE REPORT
TO YOU UNGRADED.
REMEMBER: ONE SIDE OF ONE PAGE ONLY -- NO MORE!!!
You may work together, but the write-ups should be in your own words.
Note also that answers will be made available at the end of the class period in which the case study is due. In light of this, YOUR REPORTS MUST BE TURNED IN TO ME BY THE END OF CLASS, whether as a hard copy, by email, or FAX. No exceptions, please.
Case Studies will be worth 50 points each.
Students registered for 520 will meet with me at the end of class on January 19.
A class evaluation form will be distributed on the scheduled date during the last week of classes. Completing this evaluation is worth 10 points. This may not seem like much, but think of it as one grade level on one exam. You are encouraged to suggest improvements at any time, preferably in a courteous and constructive manner.
Extra credit will not usually be available. A possibility is to research an emerging infectious disease and submit a one page report, written on the back of a 65" plasma-screen TV (non-returnable).
