Host-Microbial Interactions

Intro
The course is designed to provide a review of bacterial-host interactions with emphasis on virulence determinants of food-borne bacteria and host immunity following bacterial infection. Important issues such as bacterial resistance to host factors, immune modulation, and regulation of the host response to bacterial assault will be discussed. Food-borne bacterial epidemiology will also be discussed.
Approximately every fourth lecture period will include a discussion of the current literature on selected topics. Graduate students will be expected to lead the discussion on these papers. Graduate students will also be expected to write a paper on a selected topic related to the course subject.
Class notes in outline form will be provided on the Web. The instructor is willing to accommodate individuals with special needs if notified prior to attendance. The instructor will conduct the class in accordance with the Code of Academic Integrity as described in the general catalog. Talking to fellow students during an exam is prohibited and will be treated as a violation of the Code of Integrity.
