Learning Objectives: T Cell-Mediated Immunity (TCMI)

Reading Assignment: Janeway et al. Chapter 8

TCMI deals with the activation of mature resting naïve T cells to become effector helper and cytotoxic T cells and memory T cells. This unit describes the signals required to activate T cells and the effector functions of activated Tc, Th1, and Th2 cells.

When you finish TCMI, you should be able to

Describe the initial encounter of mature naive resting T cells with antigen. Include the location of the first contact and the cells and molecules involved in T cell activation.
List the three professional APC and compare and contrast their antigen-presenting capabilities.
Explain the role of vaccine adjuvants in stimulating immune responses.
Explain in general how a binding signal to a membrane receptor is converted to a chemical signal that alters DNA expression.
Describe co-stimulation of T cells and explain why this requirement is important in regulating T cell activity.
Compare and contrast naïve and effector T cell stimulation.
Describe the functions of effector Tc, Th1, and Th2 cells. Be able to sketch the interactions with target cells and describe the functions of the effector molecules shown in Janeway Fig 8.31.
Explain how effector T cell functions are localized to specific target cells.
Give specific examples of pathogens which elicit effector Tc, Th1, or Th2 cells.
Apply this information to a clinical case - be able to predict when and how T cells will respond to a bacterial or viral pathogen.
