Major milestones for the MS degree include:

  1. Completion of the Responsible Conduct of Research form should be completed in the first semester of study via GradPath.
  2. Plan of Study form completed no later than the second semester in residence.
  3. An MGP Annual Progress Report needs to be completed by the end of every spring semester and turned in to the MGP graduate program coordinator.
  4. Yearly committee meetings are mandatory, but semester meetings are suggested. 
  5. Thesis defense (typically scheduled during seminar).
  6. Completion of Degree Requirements form submitted to the Graduate College by the graduate program coordinator once confirmation has been made by the Chair of the Committee that the student has passed their defense and submitted their thesis to the University of Arizona.

Major milestones for the PhD degree include:

  1. Completion of the Responsible Conduct of Research form should be completed in the first semester of study via GradPath.
  2. Plan of Study form completed no later than the third semester in residence.
  3. An MGP Annual Progress Report needs to be completed by the end of every spring semester and turned in to the MGP graduate program coordinator.
  4. Yearly committee meetings are mandatory, but semester meetings are suggested.
  5. Prior to admission to candidacy for the doctoral degree, the student must pass a written and an oral Doctoral Comprehensive Examination.  The Comprehensive Examination Committee Appointment form must be completed and approved by the Graduate College prior to submission of the Announcement of Doctoral Comprehensive Examination, which must be approved prior to the Comprehensive Exams.
  6. Once prelim exams have been passed, students should complete a Dissertation Committee Appointment form and turn it in to the Graduate College via GradPath. 
  7. Preparation for the Disseration Research Proposal should begin during the 5th semester and be submitted to the student's GAC by the end of the 6th semester.  Proof of completion must be submitted via GradPath to the Graduate College.
  8. Dissertation defense should be scheduled no earlier than six months after the Comprehensive Examination has been passed.  Announcement of Final Oral Exam form should be submitted to the Graduate College via GradPath at least 7 business days in advance of the planned defense date.  The VSM department should be notified at least 2 weeks in advance via email to the program coordinator.  

A Minor in the MGP will consist of nine hours of graded coursework with one member of the graduate student’s committee being part of the MGP.  Dissertation work in absentia must be recommended by the MGPC and approved by petition to the Graduate College.
