Major milestones for the MS degree include:

  1. Plan of Study form completed no later than the second semester in residence.
  2. An MGP Annual Progress Report needs to be completed by the end of the spring semester and turned in to the MGP graduate program coordinator.
  3. Yearly committee meetings are mandatory, but semester meetings are preferred. 
  4. Thesis defense (typically scheduled during seminar).
  5. Completion of Degree Requirements form filled out and turned in to the graduate college once the student has completed their research and thesis.

Major milestones for the PhD degree include:

  1. Plan of Study form completed no later than the third semester in residence.
  2. An MGP Annual Progress Report needs to be completed by the end of the spring semester and turned in to the MGP graduate program coordinator.
  3. Yearly committee meetings are mandatory, but semester meetings are preferred.
  4. Prior to admission to candidacy for the doctoral degree, the student must pass a written and an oral Doctoral Comprehensive Examination.  Results of the Oral Comprehensive Examination for Doctoral Candidacy form should be printed and turned into the major advisor before the exam is taken.
  5. Once prelim exams have been passed, students should complete a Committee Appointment form and turn it in to the graduate college. 
  6. Dissertation defense should be scheduled no earlier than six months after the Comprehensive Examination has been passed.  Notification of planned defense date should be sent to the graduate college at least 7 business days in advance.  The VSM department should be notified at least 2 weeks in advance.

A Minor in the MGP will consist of nine hours of graded coursework with one member of the graduate student’s committee being part of the MGP.  Dissertation work in absentia must be recommended by the MGPC and approved by petition to the Graduate College.
